Belief elicitation with multiple point predictions
2021
Abstract We propose a simple, incentive compatible procedure based on binarized linear scoring rules to elicit beliefs about real-valued outcomes - multiple point predictions. Simultaneously eliciting multiple point predictions with linear incentives reveals the subjective probability distribution without pre-defined intervals or probabilistic statements. We show that the approach is theoretically as robust as existing methods, while adapting flexibly to different beliefs. In a laboratory experiment, we compare our procedure to the standard approach of eliciting discrete probabilities on pre-defined intervals. We find that elicitation with multiple point predictions is faster, perceived as …
Estimation of biogas produced by the landfill of Palermo, applying a Gaussian model
2008
Abstract In this work, a procedure is suggested to assess the rate of biogas emitted by the Bellolampo landfill (Palermo, Italy), starting from the data acquired by two of the stations for monitoring meteorological parameters and polluting gases. The data used refer to the period November 2005–July 2006. The methane concentration, measured in the CEP suburb of Palermo, has been analysed together with the meteorological data collected by the station situated inside the landfill area. In the present study, the methane has been chosen as a tracer of the atmospheric pollutants produced by the dump. The data used for assessing the biogas emission refer to night time periods characterized by weak…
Calculating the Homology of the Image
2020
We introduce the alternating homology of a space with a symmetric group action, and give a new construction of the image computing spectral sequence (ICSS), which computes the homology of the image of a finite map from the alternating homology of its multiple point spaces. We illustrate and motivate the ICSS with simple examples.
Multiple point spaces of finite holomorphic maps
2015
We show that there exists a unique possible definition, with certain natural properties, of the multiple point space of a holomorphic map between complex manifolds. Our construction coincides with the double point space and the k-th multiple point space for corank one map-germs, due to Mond. We also give some interesting properties of the double point space and prove that in many cases it can be computed as the zero locus of certain quotient of ideals.
Euler characteristic formulas for simplicial maps
2001
In this paper, various Euler characteristic formulas for simplicial maps are obtained, which generalize the Izumiya–Marar formula [ 14 ], the Banchoff triple point formula [ 3 ] and the formula due to Szucs for maps of surfaces into 3-space [ 27 ]. Moreover, we obtain new results about the Euler characteristics of the multiple point sets and the images of generic smooth maps and the numbers of their singularities.
